Kyle Stahl | Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Stahl joined the Oakland University staff in 2022.
Stahl was on the Western Michigan staff for 18 years, 11 on the official roster as he moved up from student assistant to volunteer assistant to Associate Head Coach in that span. Stahl was a part of the Broncos team that won the MAC in 2014; appearing in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament in both 2011 and 2014. As a volunteer, Stahl also worked with the WMU squad that made a run to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2008 defeating Dayton and Tulane in the process.
Stahl had multiple recruiting classes honored by Prep Volleyball with the Highest Honorable Mention all while training three Freshman of the Year middle blockers and multiple First Team All-MAC selections. In total, Stahl and WMU have compiled 31 All-MAC selections, 40 Academic All-MAC honorees, as well as the 2020 MAC Player of the Year, All-American, and All-Region player.
Graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and Coaching, Stahl also completed his Master of Arts in Sport Management from WMU in 2014 after playing club volleyball for six years.
Stahl and his wife, Melissa, have three daughters Stella, Charlotte, and Josie with the family’s golden doodle, Roxie.
Rick Wootten-Smith | Assistant Coach
Wootten-Smith joined the Golden Grizzlies' staff full-time in 2022.
Rick began his playing career at the University of Exeter in England, captaining the program to a third-overall finish in the UK with the men's team finishing seventh and women's team finishing third at the 2014 British Universities and College Sports National Volleyball Championship. Wootten-Smith earned the AVCA Thirty-Under-30 High School Coach Award in 2017.
Wootten-Smith started on staff at Oakland as a Volunteer Assistant Coach in 2021 in conjunction with serving as Director of Programming with Unified Volleyball being responsible with camps, clinics, and tryouts. Prior to those stints, Wootten-Smith was an Assistant Coach at Oxford along with Head Coaching experience with the Brandon School District for two seasons.
Rick and his husband, Rob, reside in Clarkston, Michigan.
